I was married, but I wasn't dead. ~~ Jimmy Stewart on kissing Grace Kelly

While I admit I am not caught up on my British celebrity gossip, I saw this headline, "'I said no way': Leona Lewis on why she turned down a kiss with heartthrob Chace Crawford" and had to make a comment.

At what point did kissing (snogging, smooching, lip service, etc.) become not a big deal? Here is the pertinent quote from this story:

“And Leona even turned down the chance to kiss handsome Gossip Girl star Chace Crawford for fear of making her boyfriend jealous. Asked if partner Lou Al-Chamaa ever gets jealous of the boys in her videos the X Factor star told Sugar magazine: 'I think he would if I was kissing them, but I’d never do that. They wanted me and Chace [Crawford] to kiss in the I Will Be video. But I said no way.’”

Oh Rexy, you're so sexy.

Ok, first, good for Miss Lewis. Second, yes, I recognize that stage kisses are a little different than real kisses. But, third, although this article is ostensibly about a stage kiss, that’s not how the interviewer is treating the incident in question.

The underlying question is, who in their right mind wouldn’t kiss a celebrity? I, for one. The brilliant Mrs. Jones would quickly evolve into the Raging-Volcano-O’Death Jones should I kiss even the dear Baroness Thatcher,* much less some lady who might compete with the brilliant Mrs. Jones’s endless beauty.

Which is a long winded way of saying, why should one’s celebrity status, political status, economic status, or physical status change morality? Since when is faithfulness dependent on greener pastures? I recall that the brilliant Mrs. Jones said to me once, before we were dating, Jonesy, it’s unmanly to leave your options open. And it’s true, much of adulthood means narrowing your options.

A pox on situational morality.

P.S. The quote goes on and leads us to our next post: “They wanted me and Chace [Crawford] to kiss in the I Will Be video [sic]. But I said no way…I’d just have been too embarrassed, he’s my friend! He’s so beautiful, I mean, look at him - he could be a girl. He’d be a really pretty girl.”

*When did the Iron Lady become a baroness?
